My trusty pair of Jordans have been with me since middle school and symbolically they represent my journey from childhood to adulthood, from conformity to rebellion, and from being single to being engaged!

Childhood to Adulthood:
Back in the 90’s Nike marketed Michael Jordan’s trademark shoes with such finesse that everyone in my middle school had to have a pair. On the days that the newest Jordans were released many parents took their kids out of school to go to the nearest mall to line up and spend over $150 to obtain the coveted Jordans. My immigrant parents thought the hoopla over shoes was ridiculous and refused to buy me a pair. I didn’t give up. I saved my lunch money and made extra money on the side selling miscellaneous goods to my classmates for several months.

Eventually I had enough money to buy my precious Jordans! The hard work and dedication I put in to getting those shoes were the impetus for developing a good work ethic that has served me well through my young adulthood. I learned to work hard for things I want and in the process I have come to appreciate things a lot more than I would have than if they were handed to me.

Conformity to Rebellion:
My quest to have a pair of Jordans marked the end of my desire to conform to the expectations of those around me. After I worked so hard to get those shoes I was ecstatic each time I wore them to school, until the newest pair of Jordans were released a couple weeks later and my shoes became old news. I realized that I just spent a ton of money on a fad and that I could not spend my life trying to keep up with the Joneses.

I stopped coveting my now out of style Jordans and started focusing on bettering myself for college. That decision helped me become the successful person I am today because my priority changed from wanting to please and impress others to striving to please and impress myself!

Single to Engaged:

When I met my fiancé back in 2007 I discovered he was a runner and he wanted me to run with him! I thought to myself “why not?!” This is a gorgeous man who wants me to do something constructive with him. I whipped out my dusty Jordans and ran right into his heart. Now we are engaged to be married and I can say that the miles I’ve walked and the miles I have run in my dear shoes have been well worth the journey!

Ha ha, I just replied to your last email.

It's amazing how much time, and money we put into illusions. But if we are lucky enough to find ourselves and carry on the journey as better women, then hopeful we can pass on our knowledge to others.

I am so pleased to have you share your story here. Thanks Amy.
